About the Author
Mildred Potash was born in Brooklyn, New York. She has always been an animal lover. Her very first pets were two rats, and during her life she has enjoyed the companionship of hamsters, guinea pigs, two ferrets, a cat, and dogs. Mildred is an outspoken advocate for animal rights, and her appreciation of the warmth and intelligence of rats inspired her to write this book.
Can you tell us more about your book “Millie and Cupcake”? What’ the story about?
Millie has to move to the city because her father has a new job there. She is shy and has no friends until she meets cupcake the rat. Millie’s mom will not let Millie have a pet until Millie is a little older.
Millie’s pet, of all creatures imaginable, is a rat. Many children would scream, run or think it horrid, but I’m guessing that is not the case with little Mille. What makes Millie and Cupcakes relationship so special?
There is trust and they don’t judge each other. They become best friends. Cupcake follows Millie everywhere and she loves taking care of Cupcake.
This story being an educational read teaches the reader, that rats are far different from the common belief. Do you want to tell us a bit more about why rats can be such devoted, loyal and loving pets?
I had rats for 13 years. Each one had their own personalities. I have also had gerbils and hamsters. Out of all three animals, rats are the best because they want to be around their owners a lot and they don’t sleep as much as hamsters do. The rats I had in the past (Cupcake, Ben, and Squirt) were the sweetest, most loving rats. They would always sit by my side or my shoulder, or give me little kisses. Another cute thing about rats is when they brux. This means they grind their teeth when they are happy and content sitting with their human.
What do Millie’s family and friends think of Cupcake?
She keeps Cupcake hidden for a while. Little did she know that her parents knew she was taking care of Cupcake. They praised Millie for doing such a good job taking care of a pet.
Mildred what will you be working on next? Can we expect more adventures for Mille, or do you have other plans?
There is a part two in production. It’s called “Cupcake’s babies”. I am also in the process of creating little Millie and Cupcake series.
What advice would you give to others who may be interested in writing for younger readers?
Write from your heart about what you care about.
You have had a number of different animals yourself, do you have any funny stories that you could share with us?
I had this cute little rat named squirt. I called her my sidekick because she was always by my side or hanging out on my shoulder. Squirt used to play and run around chasing my hand; it was so cute. What made me laugh is when she stole my food from my hand and ran off with it.
You are an outspoken advocate for animal rights; would you like to take this opportunity to share a message?
Stand up for animals, they have no voice, we are their voice. We need to protect them, there is too much abuse going on out there around the world.
Where can our readers find out more about animal rights, how to volunteer, or support the work of animal right charities?
Volunteering is a good way to help animals and help find them good homes. A lot of animal shelters need volunteers. I volunteered a few times at the Sean Casey animal rescue.
Where can our readers find out more about you? Is there any way that they could contact you?
I have two face book pages for Millie and Cupcake: https://www.facebook.com/MillieandCupcake .and a regular Facebook page where they can type my full name in.
